Antique 1898 J.Stiff and Sons Stoneware Jar with Lid.This is a very old heavy pottery jar/cannister which is dated at the side 1898 - the year after the death of the founder James Stiff - and was made in London England, J stiff and Sons specialised in sanitary stoneware and drain pipes, architectural Terra Cotta, chimney pots, garden vases, glazed stoneware, bottles, jars, filters and jugs, electrical stoneware, insulators, porous cells, battery jars etc. This antique stoneware jar with a pale glaze ,though not the most attractive of their wares and which does show age and useage,is remarkable by the fact that the lid when slightly turned has a very good seal - no rubber here. On the side of this collectable antique cannister made by the sons of James Stiff is impressed from the base up wards the writting - 1989 TD - what next appears is either the letter I or numeral 1 then an arrow pointing at J Stiff and Sons Ltd.You will seee by our photographs the jar and lid have a few nibbles - who wouldn't at that age - we are not really sure what the jar's use was for - it possibly could be salt or maybe you know. The approximate sizes are 5.75 ins (14.cms) and stands 7 ins (17.75 cms) tall.A lovely piece of London stoneware history, perfect to display in your vintage kitchen, good condition.
